August Bubel has been a big fan of firefighters since his very first experience with them in Santa Barbra, California, where he and his family witnessed local firefighters’ efforts battling and containing wildfires.
August and his family moved to Germany, but the image of firefighters taking on wildfires never faded from his mind -- at the age of three, August decided to dress as a firefighter in a local carnival. Shortly after moving to Carrboro, August met his neighbor…who happened to be a retired Carrboro firefighter. “In the first year here in Carrboro, August strolled down the street with his push bike to his preschool next to the Carrboro Town Commons,” said August’s Mom, Isabel Bubel. “We had to check which fire trucks were out every time we passed the fire station.”
So when Carrboro Fire and Rescue decided to hold the first ever Carrboro Fire Safe Logo contest during their open house this past October, August was there and ready to contribute! Children from all over the town participated in this contest, but August’s design took home first place!
Carrboro Fire and Rescue and August’s parents surprised the second grader by stopping by his classroom at Carrboro Elementary and presenting him with the completed logo including his design. August’s logo will be on full display throughout the upcoming year on all fire department equipment.
