Orange County has mandated the use of face coverings in indoor or outdoor situations where people cannot maintain a 6-foot physical distance from others. By covering your face when you are out in public, you help reduce the risk of infecting those around you.
The Town of Carrboro is implementing a community mask/face coverings distribution plan, developed with guidance from the Town Council.
This plan targets the most vulnerable communities during the first phase of distribution, including low income neighborhoods, African American, Latinx and Immigrant communities and senior living facilities. Direct distribution to these communities is underway. Masks are also available for those in need at Carrboro’s police and fire stations. See below for details.
“We hope to satisfy the expected demand of any resident who may be in need,” said Town Manager David Andrews. “This effort responds to the Council’s interests to ensure that everyone in our town has access to masks to protect public health and slow the spread of the coronavirus in our community.”
Thus far, all cloth masks being distributed to the public have been donated to the Town. The Town has acquired almost 2,000 from donations through the Facemask Warriors, Sports Endeavors and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The Town also has received 4,000 masks from the Orange County Emergency Operations Center. Additional masks will be ordered to meet the need.
There is a bin located outside the Carrboro Police Department if you would like to donate masks.

- You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick.
- Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public, for example to the grocery store or to pick up other necessities.
- Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
- The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.
- Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker.
- Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.
