"A Century of Black History Commemorations"

Thank you to our speakers Dr. Ivy Taylor and NC Rep. Amos Quick III for “A Century of Black History Commemorations" held on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026.

While discussing historical milestones of American Black History such as the Great Migration (c. 1910–1970), which saw six million Black Americans relocate from the rural South to Northern/Western cities, each speaker returned to the importance of family in their lives and success -- and in particular, the key role of their grandmothers.

This lecture series is presented by the Town of Carrboro for Black History Month with hosts Mayor Barbara Foushee and Michelle Blume of the Carrboro Recreation, Parks and Cultural Resources Department.

A decade ago, Ivy Taylor was Mayor Taylor, serving three years as San Antonio’s top elected official. Now the Carolina alum is back in Chapel Hill. Dr. Ivy Taylor is a prominent leader in public service and higher education, known for her time as the first Black woman mayor of San Antonio (2014-2017) and later the first female president of Rust College (2020-2023).

Currently she’s a Professor of the Practice in Public Leadership at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government and Director of Local Relations for the UNC System in Chapel Hill, focusing on bridging university and community efforts.

Pastor and NC Representative Amos L. Quick III is a lifelong North Carolina resident and serves as pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Lexington, N.C. He holds degrees from UNC-Wilmington and Andersonville Theological Seminary and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Green Neighborhoods Grant Program

Carrboro Announces Green Neighborhoods Grants: Apply Today!

The Town of Carrboro is officially inviting residents to help lead the charge against climate change. Applications are now open for the Green Neighborhoods Grant Program, offering up to $25,000 to fund community-driven projects that make Carrboro a greener, more resilient place to live.

Empowering Local Action

Rooted in the Carrboro Community Climate Action Plan adopted in 2017, the program is designed to move climate action from the Town Hall directly into neighborhoods. The grant prioritizes projects that benefit low-income communities and communities of color—groups often disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change.

“What makes this program truly unique is that instead of telling neighborhoods how to fight climate change, it empowers neighbors to work with neighbors to address the issues that they care about most in ways that they know will be successful,” said Chief Sustainability Officer Amy Armbruster.

What Can the Funds Be Used For?

Neighborhoods are encouraged to dream big. The program seeks projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve ecosystem resiliency, or spark climate awareness. Successful past recipients have used funds to:

  • Launch neighborhood compost drop-off programs.
  • Construct rain gardens to mitigate local flooding.
  • Plant native trees and community gardens to cool neighborhoods and support pollinators.
  • Start education campaigns to empower neighbors to take action.

How to Apply

The Town is looking for projects that demonstrate strong neighborhood participation and a clear plan for environmental and social impact.

  • Maximum Award: $25,000
  • Deadline: Feb. 18, 2026, at 5 p.m.
  • Application & Details: Visit the Green Neighborhoods Grant Webpage

Support is Available

The Town of Carrboro is committed to making this process accessible to everyone. If your neighborhood needs help with language translation, finding a fiscal agent, or one-on-one application support, the Sustainability Office is ready to assist.

Mayor’s Moment – February 2026

February is a meaningful month in Carrboro—one that calls us to both reflect and connect.  There are many opportunities for connection this month as we observe and celebrate Black History Month. During Black History Month, we honor the profound contributions, leadership, creativity, and resilience of Black Americans, whose history is deeply woven into the story of Carrboro, Orange County, and our nation. This month is an opportunity not only to celebrate achievements, but also to listen, learn, and recommit ourselves to the values of equity, justice, and inclusion that Carrboro strives to uphold.

February also brings Valentine’s Day, reminding us of the importance of love in all its forms—love for our families, our friends, our neighbors, and our community. In Carrboro, love shows up through kindness, civic engagement, volunteerism, and care for one another, especially during challenging times so as we move through this month together, let us honor our history, strengthen our connections, and continue building a Carrboro that is welcoming, compassionate, and committed to dignity and opportunity for all.  And let’s not forget about the other holidays and observances this month, all of which provide opportunities to celebrate each other, to connect and to support various causes.

Recently, the 2026 Carrboro Town Council Retreat provided an important opportunity for reflection, collaboration, and alignment as we looked ahead to the work before us. Over the course of the retreat, Council members engaged in thoughtful and productive discussions centered on our town pillars, shared values, community priorities, and long-term vision for Carrboro.  Council priorities include housing (affordable, workforce, emergency and transitional); transportation, climate resilience and land use.

Together, we examined the challenges and opportunities facing our town, strengthened our working relationships, and reaffirmed our commitment to equity, transparency, sustainability, and inclusive governance. As we move forward, the insights and direction established during this retreat will help guide our policy decisions, town budget decisions and collaboration with staff, boards, and residents.

Finally, please take the time to check your voter registration, early voting schedules and polling sites and above all, make a plan to vote.  Tell your friends and neighbors because all elections are important so let’s get ready to vote!

Take the Triangle Bikeway Survey

Take the Triangle Bikeway Survey

The Triangle Bikeway is a planned, 23-mile bikeway that would connect Raleigh, Cary, RTP, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

This bikeway could potentially connect to a future extension of the Morgan Creek Trail in Chapel Hill, which will be extended to connect with Carrboro’s soon-under-construction Morgan Creek Greenway.

A survey is being conducted by the Capital Area MPO (CAMPO) on the eastern portion of the bikeway, which will connect Raleigh to RTP and be funded by Wake County and the Research Triangle Foundation.

As this is the first portion of a bikeway that could connect to Carrboro in the future, we encourage you to learn more about the project and take the survey at https://monkeylink.co/3442b8.
