CARRBORO, NC -- Carrboro Public Works has installed an asphalt art project at the intersection of Roberson Street and the Libba Cotten Bikeway this week.
The project, designed in-house by staff members, is part of the Town's efforts to make Carrboro a safer and more inviting place to walk and bike. The project is similar to efforts in other North Carolina communities such as Durham (W. Club Boulevard and Glendale Avenue) and Asheville (Coxe Avenue, Westville Place and Waynesville Avenue.).
Asphalt art projects like these have been shown to correspond with increased yield rates from drivers and more predictable crossing behavior from pedestrians. A 2022 study by Bloomberg across three unsignalized intersections in three different states reports a 27% increase in drivers yielding to crossing pedestrians and a 32% decrease in crossings involving a conflict following the installation of asphalt art.
Thank you to the Town of Carrboro Public Works Streets and Grounds Division for their great work in making this project a reality!
